In a blistering attack on the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre, Rahul Gandhi on Friday said Prime Minister Narendra Modi protects the rich while the Congress bats for the poor, the weaker sections and the farmers of the society. Addressing a poll campaign in Haryana's Yamuananagar, the Congress chief further accused Modi of making several false promises in the last five years.
"During the past five years, Modi has made several promises to the people of this country. Wherever he goes, he spreads hatred," Gandhi was quoted as saying at Yamunanagar.
"He promised putting Rs 15 lakh into every Indian's bank account. Did anyone get anything??" the Gandhi scion said at the public meeting in Yamunanagar district's Jagadhri town this afternoon.
The Congress president also claimed that the prime minister waived loans worth Rs 3.5 lakh crore of 15 industrialists, adding that "Modi protects the rich". Last but not the least, Gandhi stated that unlike the Bharatiya Janata Party, the Congress keeps its promises and works for the farmers, the weaker sections and the poor.
"In 2009, we had promised to waive off Rs 72,000 crore worth farm loans in the country and fulfilled that promise. Similarly, 20 per cent of India's poorest families will receive Rs 72,000 as promised," Gandhi said.
The 2019 polls are a fight between two ideologies. On one hand are the BJP, the RSS and Narendra Modi and on the other is the Congress," he added.
Gandhi is on a day's visit to Haryana to be part of Congress state unit's ongoing "Parivartan Yatra". Besides, he is also scheduled to address a series of meetings in the state ahead of next month's crucial Lok Sabha Elections 2019.
Seven-phase Lok Sabha polls are scheduled to take place between April 11 and May 19 while the counting of votes will be taken up on May 23.
