'Seems Election Commission has woken up to its power': After multiple gag orders, Supreme Court 'praises' poll panel

New Delhi:

Day after rebuke, the Supreme Court on Tuesday ‘praised’ the Election Commission for taking action against the erring politicians. Following the poll panel’s multiple gag orders against leaders across all party lines, the top court on Tuesday said that, “it seems Election Commission has woken up to its power and taken action against politicians.”

The Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and also comprising Justice Sanjiv Khanna made it clear that no further order was required for now. Following the Supreme Court nudge on Monday, the poll panel took action against uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan and Union Minister Maneka Gandhi.

The bench was hearing a PIL filed by an NRI Yoga teacher based in Sharjah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), seeking a direction to the EC to take "strict action" against political parties if their spokespersons make remarks based on caste and religion in the media in the run up to general elections.
