New Delhi:

Congress leader Navjot Singh Sidhu on Thursday backed her wife’s allegations against Punjab Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh that he opposed her claim for a ticket from Amritsar and Chandigarh. "My wife has that much strength and moral authority that she will never lie. This is my answer," said Mr Sidhu.

Earlier, Navjot Kaur Sidhu had claimed that she was denied party ticket from Amritsar due to the Punjab Chief Minister, with whom her husband shares an unfriendly relationship. Navjot Kaur claimed Amarinder Singh told her that she may not win from Amritsar as people were against her after the Dussehra train tragedy, where at least 60 were killed and 57 others injured.

"Captain Sahib (Amarinder Singh) and Asha Kumari (Congress's Punjab in-charge) think Madam Sidhu does not deserve an MP ticket," she had said on Wednesday.

She also claimed that the Punjab CM told her that he would win all the 13 Lok Sabha seats in the state by himself. “Look, Amarinder Singh is our junior captain. Rahul Gandhi is our senior captain. Our junior captain has said he would win all 13 seats by himself," she added.

Amarinder Singh, however, denied the allegations levelled by Navjot Kaur, saying he had no role in ticket allocation and the decision was taken by party high command in Delhi.

Ticket allocation was done by the Congress high command in Delhi, and they had chosen not to accept Navjot Kaur's application for ticket to contest from Chandigarh," he said, adding that Chandigarh was not under Punjab.

The Congress party once again trusted four time MP to fight against BJP’s Kirron Kher in Chandigarh. In 2014, Kher had defeated the Congress veteran and wrested the constituency from him.

The Punjab chief minister also said that he will resign from the post of chief minister if the Congress party was wiped out of the state in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

“I would take responsibility and quit if the Congress was wiped out of the state in these Lok Sabha elections. All ministers and MLAs have been made responsible for Congress party’s performance in the state,” Singh said.

Punjab will go to polls in the seventh and last phase of Lok Sabha elections on May 19. The counting of votes will take place on May 23. The Congress party is hoping to continue its 2017 Assembly elections' performance when it won 77 of the state's 117 seats to end the 10 year Akali Dal-BJP rule.
