New Delhi:

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Thursday filed her nomination for Lok Sabha elections from Uttar Pradesh’ Rae Bareli seat. After filing her nomination, the Congress leader, who was accompanied by son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka, reminded the BJP of its 2004 defeat under Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s leadership. "Don't forget 2004. Vajpayee Ji was invincible, but we won," Sonia Gandhi told reporters when asked if Modi is invincible.

Earlier in the day, the UPA chairperson had performed a ‘havan’ and held a mega road show to show her strength, before filing her nomination from Rae Bareli. The entire Gandhi family, including Priyanka Gandhi’s husband Robert Vadra, attended the special ‘Pooja’.

Sonia Gandhi, who has been representing the constituency since 2004, is trying to retain the seat for the fifth time. The seat, which will head for voting in the fifth phase on May 6, will see a straight contest between Sonia Gandhi and Dinesh Pratap Singh, who had recently joined the BJP after leaving the Congress. She had won the seat in 2004, 2006 (bypoll), 2009 and in 2014.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi, who accompanied her mother to the district collectorate office, fired a fresh salvo at the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying that before Modi, there were many other arrogant people in India who thought they were invincible.

“There have been many people in Indian history who had the arrogance to believe that they're invincible & bigger than the people of India. Narendra Modi for the last 5 years has done nothing for the people of India. His invincibility will be in full view after election results,” the Congress chief said.

Narendra Modi, who came to power in 2014 with a massive mandate, is seeking another term as the prime minister of the country, on the issue of nationalism. Elections for the 543 parliamentary constituencies are scheduled to be held in seven phases from April 11 to May 19. The results will be declared on May 23 by the Election Commission, the same day counting of votes will take place.
