New Delhi:

Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has courted row for making controversial remarks against President Ram Nath Kovind. Addressing a rally in Jaipur, Gehlot reportedly said that Kovind was made the President of India due to certain ‘caste equations.’ The Rajasthan Chief Minister and senior Congress leader claimed that Kovind’s nomination was influenced by the Gujarat Elections. “I believe Ram Nath Kovind ji was made president keeping in mind caste considerations and Advani ji lost the race,” Gehlot was quoted as saying by news agency ANI. The BJP slammed the Congress and its leader for making casteist statement against the President. Addressing media in New Delhi, senior BJP leader GVL Narsimha Rao said that, “We appeal to Election Commission to give a notice to Ashok Gehlot and to give a directive that no political party should make a remark critical of the President of India.”

 

Ram Nath Kovind was elected as President of India on July 20, 2017. The former Governor of Bihar was declared the winner in the election for the 14th President of India in 2017.He got 7,02,044 votes, while his opponent, the joint Opposition candidate, Meira Kumar, got 3,67,314 out of a total of 10,69,358. While the outcome of the election between the two candidates was a foregone conclusion, with nearly 40 political parties backing Kovind, the opposition (comprising 17 parties) had termed it a “battle of ideology” and Kumar had repeatedly appealed to the electorate to vote according to their conscience.
