Indian cinema makes waves; 'Sanju', 'Newton', 'Gali Guleiyan' nominated for AACTA Asian Film Award (Twitter)

New Delhi:

Gali Guleiyan, Sanju and Newton - all Indian films - are set to strike gold as they have been nominated in the Best Asian Film category of the AACTA Awards - Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts Awards. AACTA announced the nomination on Thursday. "This year's Best Asian Film nominees form a unique snapshot of the finest Asian films from the past year, from box-office hits and international film festival favourites to a Palme d'Or winner and multiple Best Foreign Language Film Oscar entries," AACTA said in a statement.

Asian cinema, including Indian films, have been gaining popularity all over the world and in Down Under. In 2017 alone, Asian films contributed $36 million at the Australian box office.

Other nominees include South Korean film "1987 When The Day Comes", Taiwanese film "The Bold, The Corrupt and The Beautiful", two Chinese films, "Dying to Survive" and "Youth", Japanese film "Shoplifters" and "Tombiruo" from Malaysia.

The jury is led by Oscar winner Russell Crowe. The jury includes veteran Bollywood actors Shabana Azmi and Anupam Kher along with Australian film critic, producer and presenter Margaret Pomeranz.

The AACTA Award for Best Asian Film was initiated to honour the exceptional work of films from the Asian region as well as their growing popularity worldwide, according to AACTA.
