Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani in Kabir Singh.
Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani’s film remains unstoppable at the box-office. Directed by Sandeep Vanga Reddy, the film has crossed the Rs 250-crore mark within a month of its release. It has become the biggest hit of 2019 so far, surpassing URI’s lifetime collection of Rs 245.36 crore.
Trade analyst Taran Adarsh posted the film’s box office figures on Twitter. He wrote, ''#KabirSingh stays strong, despite #Super30 making a dent in biz [multiplexes specifically]... [Week 4] Fri 2.54 cr. Total: ₹ 252.14 cr. India biz.’’
Kabir Singh is the highest grossing solo film of Shahid Kapoor’s career. On the day of its release, the film raked in a staggering Rs. 22.71 crore. Thanking his fans for the love and support, Shahid said, "The most flawed character I have ever played. Has become my most loved. Indeed, Indian cinema and the audience has come a long way. More power to brave choices. More power to you all for your maturity and humanness. You have given me wings to fly. To not only be burdened by the need to be loved to be a star but to have the courage to be hated in equal measure to be an actor. Here's to cinema mirroring life. To protagonists who don't have to be restricted by their goodness and can be human and imperfect. There is perfection in imperfection and that is the beauty and the challenge of this human life. Thank you. Again and again. You all are the heroes of this story."
While the film is continuing to create magic at the box-office, many criticised it for being "misogynistic" and "patriarchal.''
Asked about the allegations of toxic masculinity and poor treatment of women in the film, Vanga said, ''When you are deeply in love and deeply connected to a woman (and vice versa), if you don’t have the liberty of slapping each other, then I don’t see anything there.” Vanga had previously directed the Telugu hit Arjun Reddy, which was also a major box office success, and had attracted similar criticism, albeit on a smaller scale.
Vanga even slammed the critics and described them as 'parasites who are the real threat to the film industry' and said, ''Probably they never experienced (love) in the right way.'' He added, ''They were only on the feminist side, they didn’t speak about anything else.''
Besides Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani, Kabir Singh also stars Arjan Bajwa, Suresh Oberoi, Kamini Kaushal, Adil Hussain, Nikita Dutta and Soham Majum among others.
