New Delhi:

With a spree of biopics on political leaders lined up on big screens, films have become the newest campaign runners in this season of polarised politics. After quite a buzz on social media over 'The Accidental Prime Minister', a film on former PM Manmohan Singh, another biopic is announced on the life of Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Titled 'My Name is RaGa', the film will explore the political journey of the Gandhi scion right from the time of Indira Gandhi’s assassination to his tenure as the Congress president. Helmed by filmmaker Rupesh Paul, the movie is expected to hit the theatres this April, days ahead of the crucial Lok Sabha Elections 2019.

The four minutes and three seconds teaser of My Name is RaGa, which hit the Internet on Saturday, features actor Aswini Kumar as Congress president Rahul Gandhi. While Himant Kapadiya is seen playing Gandhi's political rival Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Raju Kher will be essaying the role of former prime minister Manmohan Singh.

From being a moody child to fighting his mental trauma following the death of his grandmother Indira Gandhi, the teaser gave a glimpse into the inner life of Gandhi. Post Indira Gandhi's death, the little Rahul also started having a premonitions about the impending assassination of his father Rajiv Gandhi, the teasur suggests. It also features several other members of the Nehru-Gandhi family, including UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her daughter Priyanka Gandhi.

Though RaGa is expected to be yet another addition in the string of political biopics, director Paul claimed that it is not a biopic and will neither glorify nor demystify Rahul Gandhi. RaGa, in short, is a simple story of the coming back of a person, who had been ridiculously attacked again and again, he said.

"Anyone who has fearlessly confronted defeat and failure can relate to this story. In that sense, I don't want to call this a biopic, it's a story of any man who becomes unstoppable after he win over a catastrophic life," the director was quoted as saying by reporters.

In the teaser, a woman is also seen saying Gandhi that people love him because he taught his haters to accept him as their "beloved RaGa". To this, the Gandhi scion, amused, laughs and winks the lady back.

Talking about his planning to shoot the film, Paul further said, "We are planning to shoot at more interesting locations like Collin College in the US where he had to study with a fake name and also the school where he completing his schooling and also a brief portions in Italy where his grandparents lived".

"We have a very small schedule left for shooting until the movie releases. The small schedule will be covering the latest events. For instance, Priyanka's entry in active politics we have added during the last day of our last shooting schedule," he said.

"So basically we will wait for 10 per cent of the shooting schedule since it's a political movie and political events keep happening unexpectedly," Paul added.

While RaGa has already got a possible release date ahead  of General Election 2019,  PM Narendra Modi’s much-anticipated biopic starring Vivek Oberoi in the lead role, is yet to hit the floor.
