New Delhi:

Sonam Kapoor who is known for her staunch advocacy in animal rights has been named PETA India's person of the year, 2018.  A statement from the animal rights body People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) India stated that Kapoor who is a vegan herself, practices as she preaches by taking taken huge steps in animals rights and also excluding the use of animal products even in her own handbag line -Rheson.

"Whether she's enjoying vibrant vegan meals or rallying her fans to do their part to stop animal suffering, Sonam Kapoor never hesitates to help animals any way she can. PETA India encourages everyone to take a page out of her book and live with compassion and respect for all beings" said PETA India Associate Director Sachin Bangera.

Earlier in 2016, Kapoor was also named as PETA India's Hottest Vegetarian Celebrity.

The non-profit organization for animal also stated that Kapoor's past animal advocacy include efforts such as urging the Environment Ministry not to revoke the ban on classroom dissection for university life science and zoology students, calling for a Maharashtra state-wide ban on glass-coated manja that can entangle and kill birds and donating "kind kites" to children to help prevent injuries from manja among others.

Past recipients of PETA India's Person of the Year Award include Anushka Sharma, Sunny Leone, Dr Shashi Tharoor, former Supreme Court Justice KS Panicker Radhakrishnan, actors Kapil Sharma, Hema Malini and others.
