Aishwarya Rai Bachchan failed to impress her fans with her last Bollywood outing Fanney Khan. A couple of days before her apperance at the Cannes Film Festival, it has been learnt that the actress has finalized her next project. Riding the tide of period dramas, the actress has also taken up the same and unlike others like Rangana in Manikarnika and Deepika in Paadmavaat, Ash will be seen playing the part of an antagonist.

According to a report by Mid Day Aishwarya has given a nod to play a negative character in Mani Ratnam's upcoming period drama set in the 10th century.

Reveals a source as quoted by Mid Day,  "The story takes place in the 10th century before Raja Chola became a king. Aishwarya will be seen as Nandini, the wife of Periya Pazhuvettaraiyar, who served as the chancellor and treasurer of the Chola kingdom. Her character is written as a mysterious, power-hungry woman who manipulates her husband to plan the downfall of the Chola empire because she has been wronged by them."

Aishwarya has previously portrayed grey characters in films like Khakee (2005) and Dhoom 2 (2006) with much conviction, it will be rather interesting to see her return to the negative space with this Mani Ratnam film.

Not to mention, Aishwarya and Mani Ratnam's bonding goes back a long way ever since her debut with Iruvar (1997), so you can only imagine how special this film is going to be for both of them. "Aishwarya was approached for the project last year. But she bid her time, understanding the layers of her character before giving the nod last month. Contrary to reports, Amitabh Bachchan is not part of the movie. Mohan Babu will play Aishwarya's husband", added the source in the same interaction with Mid Day.

There were early reports that the Bachchan junior couple will come together for their next film. Considering thefact that Aishwarya and Abhisekh made quite a statement in Mani Ratnam's Guru and Raavan, it will be a delight to see Bollywood's favourite couple back on screen again.
