Amitabh Bachchan To Receive Dadasaheb Phalke Award, India's Highest Honour In Cinema

Amitabh Bachchan will receive the Dadasaheb Phalke Award 2018. The big announcement was made by Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Prakash Javdekar on Tuesday

"The legend Amitabh Bachchan who entertained and inspired for 2 generations has been selected unanimously for #DadaSahabPhalke award. The entire country and international community is happy. My heartiest Congratulations to him. @narendramodi @SrBachchan" tweeted the Union minister. 

 

The 76-year-old screen icon was selected unanimously for the highest award in Indian cinema. Amitabh rose to stardom with his 'Angry Young Man' persona capturing the anger of the young generation in the 1970s with films such as "Zanjeer", "Deewar" and "Sholay", continues to be a force to reckon with in Indian cinema.

In a career spanning five decades, and after delivering more that 190 films Bachchan has given memorable performances is a four-time National Film Award winner.  Amitabh has also  won fifteen Filmfare Awards and is the most nominated performer in any major acting category at Filmfare, with 41 nominations overall. The Government of India honoured him with the Padma Shri in 1984, the Padma Bhushan in 2001 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2015 for his contributions to the arts. 

Dada Saheb Phalke is presented annually at the National Film Awards ceremony by the Directorate of Film Festivals. The recipient is honoured with a Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) medallion, a shawl, and a cash prize of Rs 10,00,000.

Meanwhile, Mahesh Babu was honoured by the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (South) Award. or his performance as the Chief Minister in Bharat Ane Nenu. Instituted this year, Dadasaheb Phalke Awards for excellence in South cinema was hosted in Hyderabad. Anushka Shetty, won the best actress award for her stellar performance in the film Bhaagamathie.
