New Delhi:

Veteran lyricist-writer Javed Akhtar on Monday lashed out at the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) for organising a protest rally over the installation of Jesus Christ statue in Bengaluru. Taking to Twitter, Akhtar claimed that on one hand 'they' were giving citizenship to Christians from across the border, but on the other, 'they' were against installation of the statue in Bengaluru.

"They boast they will give citizenship to all the religiously persecuted Christians from the neighbour countries at the same time they claim that they will not allow a statue of Jesus Christ in Banglore. Wow !! Makes perfect sense," Akhtar said in a tweet.

His comments came after the BJP, RSS and other right wing organisations took to streets against the installation of a statue of Jesus Christ in Kanakapura in Bengaluru by Congress MLA DK Shivakumar. "It is not my decision but that of villagers of the Christian community, being MLA I have to help. The land was given for it, everything is legal," Shivakumar said earlier today. ''If any remarks are made against me, my brother (DK Suresh) or people of different faiths in Kanakapura constituency, do not be provoked,'' Shivakumar appealed via a video message posted on Sunday.

Akhtar's comments make reference to CAA, which extends Indian citizenship non-Muslim minority communities from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Earlier too, the lyricist condemned the Police's act of breaking and entering into the Jamia university campus. Akhtar wrote, "According to the law of the land under any circumstances police can not enter any university campus with out the permission of the university authorities. By entering the Jamia campus with out permission police has created a precedence that is a threat to every university (sic)."
