Shahid Kapoor and Kiara Advani starrer Kabir Singh recieved mixed response from critics and cinegoers. While everyone appluaded Shahid Kapoor's performance, many called the content of the movie sexist and a glorification of toxic masculinity.
Directed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, the film recieved lukewarm response with 50% occupancy on Friday during morning shows.
Cinema trade analyst Taran Adarsh had tweeted, "#KabirSingh screen count... India: 3123 Overseas: 493 Worldwide total: 3616 screens Starts with a bang... Not just urban centres, even mass-dominated areas witness excellent occupancy in morning/pre-noon shows... Big *Day 1* biz on the cards. India biz."
The film is the Hindi remake of Telugu hit film Arjun Reddy which starred Vijay Deverakonda and Shalini Pandey in the lead roles.
According to Box Office India reports of the first-day collections of Kabir Singh, the Shahid-Kiara love romance drama minted about Rs 20 crore on its opening day making it the biggest ever opening for Shahid.
Kabir Singh on its opening day broke the record of Shhahid's last hit film Padmaavat which had made about Rs 18.21 crore. It is also the fourth biggest first day grosser after Bharat, Kalank, Kesari.
Earlier, during an interaction with PTI, when Shahid was asked about comparisons between Kabir Singh and Devdas, he stated, "I'll take that as a compliment because 'Devdas' is a classic film which is the story of a self-destructive man as the hero was mad about his love. So yes, if you look at it in a generic way, you can draw some parallels."
Shahid's character is into substance abuse and alcohol but Vanga said it was done only to stay true to the characteristics of Kabir Singh. "I have done what was needed for the film. I know there is a section in audience who feel this is not right. I don't think people in today's day and age would copy things like that."
