New Delhi:

India has been a home to some impeccable talents in every field, especially in music. From soulful singers to magnificent composers, the Indian music industry has seen it all which has proved their talent time and again.

One of such exemplary performer is renowned violinist Sharat Chandra Srivastava, who currently plays with fusion music band Mrigya. In his musical journey of over 25 years, Sharat has performed with India's premier rock band Parikrama along with world-famous musician Sting.

In his exclusive conversation with News Nation, Sharat gets candid about his love for music, Parikrama, and Mrigya.

How did you develop this inclination towards music?

Music was there in the house, in my family. My guru, my teacher was Pt Joi Srivastava, I learned from him. I have always seen musicians coming to my house and learning from my grandfather. When I was very small I developed a taste towards violin. My grandfather has students from America, Europe, UK, and all the time they were practicing music in the house. So, it was very natural phenomena to learn the violin.

Why did you choose violin?
Why not Violin? Violin has always been close to my heart and I have always seen my grandfather playing it so beautifully. So it was very obvious to take up this instrument.

In your musical journey so far, you have been associated with the renowned band Parikrama. Please tell us something about that.

Parikrama has been a very integral part of my musical journey because before Mrigya I was with Parikrama. I joined the band in 1992 and played till about 2003. Parikrama was a band which was very challenging and interesting because that was the time when I learned to play with drum and guitars and other heavy instruments. To make a mark with a violin was very challenging. But I think we did a great job.

What is the concept behind Mrigya?

Mrigya is basically the band that happened by accident. We were supposed to do a concert within one week in 1999 and we just got together for just this project, not with the thought of carrying it further. The sound of the band in that concert was so new - Raga based fusion- and then the journey started as Mrigya. We were started playing in festivals everywhere in the world.
