The ultimate diva of Bollywood Rekha, born as Bhanurekha Ganesan on 10 October 1954, has turned 59 on Thursday. She is famous for her versatile acting and acknowledged as one of the best Indian actresses in Indian cinema.
The actress was born in Madras and started her career in 1966 as a child artist in the Telugu film Rangula Ratnam. The film won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Telugu for that year.
She debuted as the lead actress in 1970 with film Sawan Bhadon. In her early days, she was more famous for her looks than acting. In late 70s, after undertaking a physical transformation after undertaking a physical transformation, she became the sex symbol in Indian media.
In a career span of over 40 years, she has acted in nothing less than 180 movies. She has won three Filmfare Awards, two for Best Actress and one for Best Supporting Actress. Her unforgettable performance as Umrao Jaan had bagged her National Film award for Best Actress.
The actress is also famous for her much controversial relationship of late 70s with Amitabh Bachchan.
In 2010, she was awarded with Padma Shri by the government of India.
