Sheila Dikshit dies at 81: Celebs mourn veteran Congress leader’s death

Former Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit breathed her last on Saturday at the age of 81. She was admitted to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute today in a critical state due to a cardiac problem. ''A multi-disciplinary team of doctors, led by Dr Ashok Seth, chairman, Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, carried out advanced resuscitative measures. Her condition stabilised temporarily. However, she had another cardiac arrest and despite all resuscitative efforts, passed away at 3:55pm," the statement said.

Various Bollywood celebrities and eminent sports personalities have expressed their condolences on the veteran Congress leader's death.

Akshay Kumar took to his Twitter account and wrote, ''Extremely sad to know about the passing away of #SheilaDixit ji...she effectively changed the face of Delhi during her tenure. Heartfelt condolences to her family 🙏🏻.''

Nimrat Kaur, in a tweet, said, ''Deepest condolences and heartfelt prayers on the passing of #SheilaDixit ji. A lady par excellence, someone who lead by example. An indispensable presence for generations to remember 🙏🏼 May her blessed soul rest in peace.''

Virender Sehwag also mourned the sudden demise of former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit. He wrote, ''Sad to hear about the passing away of #SheilaDixit ji. Heartfelt condolences to her family and loved ones.''

Mohammad Kaif also expressed his grief and wrote, ''Extremely sad to hear of the passing away of #SheilaDixit ji. Thoughts and prayers with her family and supporters in this difficult time.''

Richa Chadha also took to her Twitter account and wrote, ''#SheilaDixit demise will feel like a  personal loss to anyone who grew up in Delhi. During my school and college, the green cover of Delhi actually grew by 300% ! A tall leader. Rest in peace ma'am. Condolences to family.''

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar also paid his tribute and wrote, "Sad to the hear demise of former Delhi CM #SheilaDikshit ji . She was a very dynamic leader, she will be remembered for changing the face of Delhi with the infrastructure and development. #OmShanti."

Lata Mangeshkar remembered the former Delhi CM as a "remarkable woman". "Was deeply saddened to hear about Sheila ji's demise. A remarkable woman, former CM of New Delhi and a keen admirer of all art forms. We never discussed politics but had long talks on music and poetry. May her soul rest in peace and heartfelt condolences to her family," she posted on Twitter.

Actor turned politician Urmila Matondkar tweeted, ''Rest in peace..Smt.Sheila Dikshit ji  You will always be loved and respected for your strength,determination,fierce and yet kind personality that made Delhi more beautiful than ever among many other things Om Shanti.''

Raveena Tandon wrote on Twitter, "Respect and prayers. Condolences to her family.Was a  much respected and loved CM. Brought about a positive visible change in Delhi during her tenure. Rest in peace #sheiladixit . Om Shanti."

"Loss of a great leader...You were really loved #ShielaDikshit ma'am.A huge loss to our country. You've really left behind a great legacy. May your soul rest in peace .My condolences to the family," Bhumi Pednekar said.

Meanwhile, Dikshit was suffering from cardiac arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat). She had been undergoing treatment at Fortis Escorts hospital for the past few years. She had undergone angioplasty in November 2012 and was treated for infection some time ago.

She was one of the country’s most prominent women politician who always believed in delivering her promises. She was the longest serving chief minister of Delhi and held the top post for 15 years from 1998 to 2013.
