New Zealand theatres remove Dev Patel’s ‘Hotel Mumbai’ in wake of Christchurch mosque attacks

Dev Patel's movie Hotel Mumbai based on the 26/11 Mumbai terror attack has been pulled from New Zealand cinemas in the wake of the recent attacks at the New Zealand Christchurch mosques. Starring Dev Patel and Jeremy Issacs, Hotel Mumbai is a dramatisation based on real-life incidences at the Taj Hotel which reports to focus its mark for the unsung heroes in the terror attack which left more than 160 people dead.

Following Friday's events in Christchurch, that led 50 people dead, Australia's Icon Film Distribution have however, announced that all screenings of the movie have been suspended until March 28. Icon's head of group marketing Scott Mota said that after consultation with local exhibition partner, they had decided to put a halt to screenings "out of respect for a country in mourning". Reports added that as soon as Scot heard about the attacks on Friday a decision was arrived to suspend all advertising for Hotel Mumbai in New Zealand.

The movie stars other actors like Armie Hammer, Anupam Kher and Jason Isaacs in pivotal roles. Hotel Mumbai reportedly had made more than $118,000 in its first four days of release, only finishing behind the MCU movie Captain Marvel at the New Zealand box office over the weekend.

Australian Brenton Tarrant, 28 has been charged with murder on Saturday without pleas and is reported to be is due back in court on April 5 where authorities say he was likely to face more charges.
