New Delhi:

After a string of misses at the box-office, Shaad Ali has finally delivered a gem for the audience...Soorma

A biographical drama on the life of hockey legend Sandeep Singh, directed by Shaad Ali and starring Diljit Dosanjh and Taapsee Pannu in lead roles,  Soorma hit theatres on Friday.

Diljit plays the role of the hockey legend flawlessly. It was hard to differentiate between the reel life and real life Sandeep Singh. Taapsee, who essays the role of another Indian national hockey player Harpreet Kaur, has once again proved her mettle. Angad Bedi as the elder brother of Sandeep Singh and Vijay Raaz as his coach too did not fail to impress.

It is the  “story of the greatest come back in the history of field hockey".

The film revolves around Sandeep Singh,  a hockey legend. He impressed his coach with his “drag flicks” and became the player of the tournament by scoring the highest number of goals. However, life takes a U-turn and Sandeep hits rock-bottom.

Cinematography: Every frame of the film appears like a painting. Cinematographer Chirantan Das’s work is allowed to really shine and will make you feel like you’re a part of the journey of the protagonist. Das has done the camera work very precisely and each scene in the movie has enough power of great visual storytelling. The camera always moves with a purpose and when the protagonist scores his fastest goal, you will be amazed to see the kind of work das has done. The lightning has been very exact and well measured. The night scenes night scenes are shot in the real backgrounds and are coated in a luminous yellow haze of street lights.

Acting: Diljit has impersonated the character of hockey legend Sandeep Singh with so much perfection that it would be hard to differentiate between the real life and reel life Sandeep. It was not just the facial resemblance but Diljit physically transformed himself to fit in the shoes of a national level field hockey player. The female protagonist of the film Taapsee Pannu, who is playing the role of Harpreet Kaur, also a national level hockey player. She delivered fantastically and once again proved her mettle in the acting by portraying the character of a sportswoman. Apart from Diljit and Pannu, Angad Bedi, who is playing the role of Sandeep's elder brother, also delivered with the expectations. Satish Kaushik as the father of Sandeep and Vijay Raaz as his coach are playing playing key roles. Vijay Raaz, a less speaking and 'rude' coach grabs the attention with his catchy dialogue delivery. His "Beta Mai Bihari hun, thook ke mathe me chhed kar dunga," dialogue will make you simply leave your chairs and give him a loud round of applause in appreciation.

Sound and Music: Apart from acting, sound and music of the Soorma is another thing that added to the allure of the film. Composed by Shanker Ehsaan Loy with lyrics by Gulzar, the music of the film pleases the audience and channels a sense of patriotism and struggle.

Overall, Soorma is a very good inspirational movie that brings to the screen one of the greatest comeback stories of a sportsman - hockey legend and one of the best drag-flickers Sandeep Singh. The film is a brave and inspiring story of will, determination, optimism and passion and Shaad Ali deserves a standing ovation for making a movie on hockey in a cricket-crazy country.
