Freddie Mercury’s biopic, Bohemian Rhapsody starring Rami Malek recently hit the theatres and you will notice how Malek’s teeth been meticulously made to resemble Freddie. The makers of Bohemian Rhapsody had to coin out a lot time investing in different sizes of teeth including a set that were the actual size of Mercury’s teeth.
You’ll be amazed to know that Freddie’s extra-teeth was the Achilles shield for his impeccable voice.
Freddie grew up shy and recluse because of his teeth
Today, the world remembers him as a legend in the Rock genre with unmatchable vibratos. But, behind all the celebrations and wins, Freddie had his own battle he fought and own. Growing up in India, young Freddie always hated his two-front teeth so much to the extent that it made him insecure. He was constantly teased for his pronounced overbite that made him terribly shy and self-conscious, a trait which he always carried till his death. His classmates cruelly nicknamed him “Bucky’ and he got into the habit of covering his mouth whenever he smiled.

Little did Mercury know that his biggest insecurity would one day become his greatest blessing. It was in music where he found the most comfort.
As a teenager he formed his first band called the Hectics, and quoted his future-legend lines “I wont be a Rockstar, I will be a legend’’.
Desperately wanting to upturn his dream, Freddie enrolled himself in school and dedicated his time to music. He joined several bands but none of them reached the level of success he envisioned. Not ready to give up on his dreams, he joined forces with three former bandmates to form a band the world now know as Queen.

With Queen, his fate as a legend became sealed. Although, recluse on the inside, Freddie became a completely different person onstage. He soon came to find out that his opera-like voice was all thanks to his extra teeth in his mouth that added to his vibrato, a smile that he grew up hating.

He vowed never to fix his teeth and went on to write, Bohemain Rhapsody which is considered the greatest song of all time. Though his life was short-lived, he reminds fans to embrace the imperfections. That’s what Japanese term, the ‘Wabi Sabi’ stands for.
