New Delhi:

Vicky Kaushal's upcoming film, biopic on freedom fighter Udam Singh titled 'Sardar Udham', directed by Shoojit Sircar has been pushed by four months and now will release next year before the Republic day, giving way to Ranveer Singh' Jayeshbhai Jordaar as the solo release on Gandhi Jayanti 2020.

Sardar Udham Singh assassinated Michael O'Dwyer, the former Lieutenant Governor of Punjab in British India in 1940, to avenge the 1919 Jallianwala Bagh massacre. The project is a Rising Sun Films Production, backed by Ronnie Lahiri and Sheel Kumar. The news comes on the day the historic assasination happened.

The production house in its stateament said that their film needs more attention and hence requires a solo release. "His story deserves justice onscreen too. Starring Vicky Kaushal, we will now see you in cinemas on 15th January 2021!" said the post.

The shoot for 'Udham Singh' concluded in December. The director took to Twitter to thank the team of the film. "Felt numb when it got over.. Did not wish Shaheed Udham shooting get over .. Wish I could keep him alive..clutched him.. Hugged him.. Heartfelt thanks to my fearless crew," Sircar wrote alongside a picture of him with Kaushal and writers Ritesh Shah and Shubendu Bhattacharya. Shah previously worked with Sircar in 2016's Pink and Bhattacharya collaborated with the filmmaker on Madras Cafe (2013).

Speaking on casting Vicky, Sircar said, "I have been waiting to tell the heroic tale of Shaheed Udham Singh for a very long time. It is a story very close to my heart. For it, I needed an actor who could give his heart and soul to the film, be with me and tell the story together. Vicky fits the bill perfectly. I have seen his work and the dedication he brings to it. I'm very happy he is on board this project."

Apart from Vicky, the movie also stars Banita Sandhu, last seen in Sircars' October.
