The ICC has confirmed that the Event Technical Committee of the cricket World Cup has approved Seekuge Prasanna as a replacement player for injured Dimuth Karunaratne in Sri Lanka's squad for the tournament.
Karunaratne fractured his little finger during a trainingsession here and has been ruled out of further participationin the tournament. Prasanna has played 22 ODIs for Sri Lanka in which he hasscored 181 runs and taken 21 wickets with his wrist spinners. His last appearance for Sri Lanka was earlier this year whenhe played against New Zealand in Wellington.
Sri Lanka are in Pool A along with co-hosts Australia andNew Zealand, Bangladesh, England, and qualifiers Afghanistanand Scotland. They have played four matches, winning three. Their fifth pool stage match is against Australia here on March 8.
Any injury or illness-based replacement requires awritten submission to the Event Technical Committee along witha diagnosis from a medical practitioner as to the extent ofthe injury or illness. Once replaced, a player may not returnto the squad save as an approved subsequent replacement foranother injured or ill player.
