New Delhi:

Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir, who retired from international cricket last year, is known to be very active on social media. He recently tweeted his views about the situation of the national capital. “I am Delhi. Shivering on the footpath, I am Delhi. Crawling in hospitals, I am Delhi. Fighting with the system, I am Delhi. Counting my breath in the bitter air, I am Delhi. Hiding my nakedness behind a muffler, saffron, and Khadi, I am Delhi,” he had tweeted.

The tweet didn’t go down well with the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who has slammed the southpaw about his tweet. The ruling party in Delhi has now challenged the former cricketer to take the surprise visit at night shelters, hospitals in the national capital.

"@GautamGambhir ji, Take the challenge, lets do surprise checks at Night Shelters, Hospitals in Delhi. No other BJP Govt will throw this challenge (sic)," AAP legislator Saurabh Bharadwaj tweeted.

Earlier, Gambhir had categorically rejected rumours around him joining politics but the former India opener indicated he was open to coaching at the big stage. The 37-year-old World Cup winner walked into the sunset by scoring a memorable hundred in his farewell Ranji Trophy match against Andhra at the Feroz Shah Kotla.

"There are rumours which I have heard as well, probably the reason is maybe I take up social issues as well... For me Twitter was always a platform which is very, very important and where I take up social issues. I am not that kind of a character where I am going to start joking on a platform like Twitter as well. For me being a citizen of this country it is my right to take up social issues and that probably is the reason why people think I am going to join politics but there is nothing of that sort," he had said.

Gambhir scored 4154 runs in Test cricket from 58 matches, 5238 runs in ODIs and 932 in T20Is.
