'All-time high' threat to PM Modi's life, Home Ministry lays out new security rules

New Delhi:

The Home Ministry has issued an alert to all states about Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s security in wake of “all-time high” threat to his life. The ministry has put out new security rules according to which no one, including ministers, would be allowed to go near the prime minister if not cleared by the security agencies.

The security agencies have also advised the prime minister against holding roadshows during the election campaigns, according to reports. The ministry has sent out warnings to all states about the “unknown” threat to the PM’s life.

Reports suggested that the Special Protection Group (SPG), the security agency responsible for PM’s security, will check everyone going close to him and even ministers will have to go through the same procedure.

The Home Ministry’s alert came days after Pune police claimed that it recovered a letter that talks about PM Modi’s assassination in a "Rajiv Gandhi-type incident" during his roadshows.

Security agencies were asked to be more careful while doing the Advance Security Liaison – which is done around 15 days before PM’s visit to any area. An additional security ring of paramilitary and local police will also be added to PM’s periphery security during his visits.
