The famous city of Uttar Pradesh – Allahabad may soon have a new identity as Uttar Pradesh health minister Siddharth Nath Singh has written a letter to Governor Ram Naik asking to change Allahabad’s name to Prayag.

"UP Governor Ram Naik then an MP from Maharashtra] had helped 'Bombay' to be renamed as 'Mumbai'. I have written to him to consider renaming Allahabad as Prayag," said Siddharth Nath Singh to a leading press agency.

According to media reports, Yogi Adityanath government has already started the process of naming Allahabad as Prayagraj or Prayag. A decision which is expected to be notified before next year’s Kumbh Mela.

During a visit to Allahabad earlier in May, a group of Hindu saints led by Akhil Bharatiya Akhara Parishad had made proposals to UP CM Yogi Adityanath to rename the city as Prayagraj, as per reports.

Adityanath had visited Allahabad to formally announce the dates of ‘shahi snan’ for the 2019 Kumbh Mela.

He reportedly assured the group that his government would forward the proposal to the Centre for approval.

During the rule of Mughal king Akbar, Prayag was renamed as Allahabad in 1580. Allahabad means the place of Allah.

Earlier in June, Mughalsarai Railway station was renamed as Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyay junction.
