New Delhi:

A debt-ridden farmer has allegedly committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance in Sehore, which is the home district of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan.

A case was registered at Rehti police station after 55-year-old Dulchand Keer on Monday consumed poison, police said.

However, the motive behind the suicide is still not clear, District Collector Sudam Khade said.

“The cause behind farmer’s death is a matter of investigation but he was having a debt of Rs six lakh on him,” Rehti police station in-charge, Pankaj Geete said.

Sher Singh, the son of Keer however said that his father committed suicide due to rising debts. The deceased was alone in the house when the incident occurred. Singh immediately took him to a government hospital after seeing him lying unconscious. The doctors said that Keer was brought dead.

Keer remained disturbed prior to committing suicide as he had borrowed Rs four lakh from banks and another Rs two lakh from other sources, Singh said.

It is to be noted that the suicide has been committed days after the Chief Minister announced a slew of measures to end farmer woes in Madhya Pradesh.
