Bengaluru's Bellandur lake catches fire: Drivers swerve, toxic sky of smoke over city

New Delhi:

A Fire broke out on Thursday in the highly polluted waters of Bellandur Lake in Bengaluru. Dense smoke started emerging from the middle of the lake and the drivers forcefully had to swerve dangerously.

The incident erupted at around 5.50 pm on Thursday evening. Huge cloud of toxic smoke started causing panic among locals.

Toxic chemicals, garbage from small factories are dumped regularly in Bellandur and Varthur lakes in the city rendering these water bodies useless. The Bengaluru Development Authority has been under pressure to restore the lakes but no action has been taken so far.

Bellandur and Varthur are the two major lakes in Bengaluru. Both have been ruined because of the constant dumping of untreated sewage and toxic chemicals and detergents from small factories.
