In a setback to the Congress, former Rajya Sabha MP Santiuse Kujur resigned from the party on Saturday. On Friday, former Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Bhubaneswar Kalita joined the BJP after having resigned as Rajya Sabha MP and from the Congress party. The party suffered another massive blow with former MLA and minister Gautam Roy quitting the party on Saturday.

In his resignation letter he said,” With Regret I would like to inform that I am tendering my resignation from the party with immediate effect and this purely my personal decision. I have worked in the Congress party for more than 13 years and I have been pleased to be a part of the leading political party.” He also wished for the party’s “bright future” and hoped that the party will help in changing the country for better.”

“I have sent my resignation letter to congress leadership. I feel congress is directionless and going nowhere. See what is happening to the party it has been leaderless for several months now. The Pradesh congress is caught in infighting,” Economic Times quoted Kujur as saying.

The resignation came on a day when the Congress Working Committee is brainstorming is pick next party president. The committee urged Rahul Gandhi to reconsider his decision to quit as party chief and said it was yet to take a final call on his resignation.

The CWC unanimously appealed to Gandhi to lead the party, saying he was the best person for the top post at the time when the BJP-led government was "assaulting democracy and undermining people's rights".

After Gandhi refused to reconsider his decision, the CWC began consultations on finding his successor under five regional sub-groups led by younger leaders.
