Unnao gang-rape: CBI confirms charges against accused BJP MLA

New Delhi:

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has confirmed that Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was involved in the politically sensitive Unnao gang rape case.

The 18-year-old victim had alleged that Sengar raped her at his home in Uttar Pradesh’s Makhi village on June 4 last year.

Earlier, the accused BJP MLA had refused the charges against him and claimed that he was not present in his village on June 4, the day when the victim claimed he raped her.

Reacting to the CBI’s confirmation of Sengar’s role, the Unnao rape case victim demanded death penalty for the accused BJP MLA.

“I demand death penalty for BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar for raping me and for murder of my father,” the teenage survivor said.

The uncle of the victim also demanded the capital punishment for the accused BJP lawmaker and sought protection for the family.

“We demand protection for our family so that we can give our statement before the court fearlessly. We demand death penalty for Kuldeep Sengar,” said the uncle of the rape victim.

The case came to limelight after the victim attempted suicide outside UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s residence over police’s inaction against the BJP lawmaker and his brothers who allegedly gang-raped her.

On April 9, a day after the suicide attempt, Pappu Singh, father of the victim died while in judicial custody.

Singh, around 50, was in police custody since April 5 after a complaint was filed against him by his daughter’s alleged rapists.

Earlier the case was being investigated by the UP police but after the media pressure and intervention by Prime Minister Modi, the CBI took over the probe.
