CBI War: Supreme Court agrees to hear fresh petition seeking SIT probe against Alok Verma, Rakesh Asthana

New Delhi:

The Supreme Court on Thursday said that it would look into the plea seeking an urgent hearing of the PIL for a court-monitored Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe in the allegations of corruption against various Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials, including Special Director Rakesh Asthana, who was divested of his duties.

A bench headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi considered the submission of lawyer Prashant Bhushan, appearing for NGO ‘Common Cause’ that there were wider issues of corruption affecting the investigating and the PIL needed to be heard urgently.

The bench, which also comprised Justices SK Kaul and KM Joseph, asked Bhushan to provide details and said it would consider granting urgent hearing on the petition.

The NGO had also filed a plea regarding the appointment of Nageshwar Rao as the interim chief of the CBI after unceremoniously sending its Director Alok Verma on leave and divesting him of all powers along with Asthana.
