Chidambaram says 'what Centre has introduced is not GST'

New Delhi:

Senior Congress leader P Chidambaram on Sunday said “what the Centre has introduced is not GST” and it one can dub it as Indian Indirect Tax. He said it is not GST what was rolled out on July 1.

On July 6, Chidambaram had asserted that Modi government’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) is “very, very imperfect” and cannot be termed “one nation, one tax” as it has seven or more rates.

Chidambaram had said the Congress will press for a reduction in tax rates and demand a cap of 18 per cent, besides seeking to bring petroleum, electricity and real estate under the new tax regime.

“This is a very, very imperfect GST. This is not the GST which we (the UPA) had envisaged,” he had said.

What the government had implemented, he said, was a GST with at least seven rates.
