Congress president Rahul Gandhi vows to take forward Ganga activist GD Agarwal's fight

New Delhi:

Vowing to take forward environmental activist GD Agarwal’s fight towards saving the river Ganga, Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Friday hailed Agarwal as “the true son of mother Ganga”.

Agarwal passed away at a hospital in Rishikesh, Uttarakhand, on Thursday, 111 days after he began a fast for a pollution-free Ganga. He was 86.

“Saving the Ganga is like saving the country. We will never forget him and will take his fight forward,” Gandhi said on Twitter. It is rivers like the Ganga that have made India, the Congress chief noted.

Agarwal had begun his hunger strike on June 22 demanding government measures to save the Ganga.

Agarwal was moved to the AIIMS, Rishikesh after his condition deteriorated on October 9 he even gave up water. According to the hospital authorities, he suffered a cardiac arrest and was administered a potassium and heart-related medicine intravenously when he was brought there.
