New Delhi :

The Congress, country’s oldest political party is going through its worst phase with the meltdown in several states after party president Rahul Gandhi’s resignation following the humiliating victory in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In its bleakest hour, the party has now turned towards Sonia Gandhi, urging her to take charge as interim chief to help the party come out of the crisis.

According to a report published in NDTV, Sonia Gandhi has neither accepted nor rejected the request to take over her the post her son relinquished recently. However, she had told her close associates that she would not be able to take up the challenge.

Following the Congress party’s abysmal performance in the Lok Sabha elections 2019, Rahul Gandhi took up the responsibility and resigned from the post. Despite repeated requests from the party, he remained firm on his decision and asked the party to start looking for his replacement.

However, after his resignation, a serious crisis engulfed the party with may of its MLAs putting up their papers in state after states. The extent of the crisis can be understood with a point that the Congress-led coalition government in Karnataka is on the verge of falling.

While the Congress was trying hard to save its government in the southern state, most of its MLAs in Goa quit the party and switched their loyalty to the ruling BJP. The scenes in Goa were similar to what we saw in Telangana just before the Lok Sabha polls when most of the party MLAs merged with the ruling TRS.

The reason behind asking Sonia Gandhi to consider taking up the responsibility is that the Congress has so far failed to think beyond the Gandhi family and build consensus on Rahul Gandhi’s replacement.
