Dharwad Tragedy: This man survives tonnes of debris, rescued alive after 62 hours

New Delhi:

A man trapped under tonnes of debris was rescued alive by team of the Karnataka Fire Department in Dharwad today. The man has been identified as one Dilip, who was trapped under the debris of concrete and iron girders for 62 hours. The rescue operation is still underway after an under-construction building collapsed in Dharwad two days back. “Total 14 people have died. Yesterday, we rescued two people. Three more people are trapped in the debris. We have given oxygen and ORS to them. SDRF and NDRF teams are conducting rescue operation,” Dharwad Deputy Commissioner Deepa Cholan was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Dressed in green t-shirt, Dileep was greeted with loud cheers and applause as the rescuers took him out of the small opening of the collapsed basement. Rescuers on Thursday had pulled out three more bodies from the rubble of the under-construction building that collapsed at Dharwad in north Karnataka two days back, police said.

The bodies of Divya Unakal (8), Dakshayini (45) and an unidentified person were retrieved from the debris as the rescue operations entered the third day, police said. Rescuers fear that at least 12 to 15 people are still trapped under the debris as they heard voices coming from inside. The four-storeyed building, which belonged to one of the relatives of former Congress minister Vinay Kulkarni, came crashing on Tuesday.

As many as 55 people were injured in the incident. Anger and frustration were palpable as more bodies were retrieved from the accident site with loud wails of relatives.

Locals sought to know how the civic agencies turned a blind eye to sub-standard materials being used for the construction, though everybody was apprehensive about the strength of the building. Police have not arrested anyone yet. BJP MLA from Hubballi-Dharwad Central and former Karnataka chief minister Jagadish Shettar too visited the spot and took stock of the situation.
