New Delhi:

The blood pressure of DMK supremo M Karunanidhi has been stabilised as he continues to get monitored by the doctors, a medical bulletin issued by the hospital said. The DMK chief, who has been suffering from ailing health due to urinary tract infection, was admitted to a private hospital in Chennai on Saturday, the party said.

“His blood pressure has been stabilised with medical management and he continues to be monitored and treated by the panel of experts,” the hospital said.

"He was admitted to the hospital due to a sudden drop in blood pressure. He is stable now and doing fine. Please don't believe in rumours," DMK leader A Raja said.

His daughter MK Selvi had also reached the hospital early on Saturday, while his son and party working president MK Stalin termed his father as an “unshakeable force” on his post on Twitter.

"He is better. His blood pressure has stabilised," said DMK leader Kanimozhi.

Several top leaders including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Sitaram Yechury have inquired about DMK chief’s health.

He is now under the supervision of medical experts as he receives further treatment.

Karunanidhi (94) was admitted in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of Kauvery Hospital at 1:39 am. He was rushed to the hospital after his blood pressure had dropped, the hospital said in a statement.

Several senior DMK leaders, including working president MK Stalin and his alienated elder brother MK Alagiri were present at the hospital. Other top leaders such as Duraimurgan, Rajya Sabha MP Kanimozhi and former Union Minister A Raja were also present on Friday morning.

Following Karunanidhi’s admission to the hospital, party workers poured in large numbers near the hospital complex and chanted “long live Thalaivar” (leader).

The DMK leaders had earlier visited Karunanidhi at his residence in Gopalapuram region before he was rushed to the hospital. Alagiri, who was expelled from the party by the DMK supremo in January 2014 after a clash with Stalin, was also among the visitors.

Stalin had said the former Tamil Nadu chief minister’s health was improving, hours before Karunanidhi was shifted to the hospital. On Wednesday, he had assured people that there was nothing serious about his father’s health.

For the past two years, the DMK president has not been making any public appearance due to his ill health, but he still holds the top post in the Dravidian party.

Karunanidhi, whose health has been a matter of concern since October 2016, entered his 50th year as party chief on Friday.
