Donald Trump on CAATSA sanctions for S-400 deal with Russia: India will soon find out

New Delhi:

US President Donald Trump on Wednesday said that “India will find out soon” about the possible CAATSA sanctions for defying a Washington warning by signing the deal to purchase S-400 Triumf anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia.

"India is going to find out. You will see. Sooner than you think,” Trump said in a response to a question during his interaction with reporters in the Oval Office of the White House.

On October 5, India had signed the $5 billion deal to purchase S-400 Triumf anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia during President Vladimir Putin’s two-day visit to New Delhi.

The US had earlier warned India against the defence deal with Russia. Under the amended Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA), President Trump has the authority to grant a waiver to India for the deal with sanctions-hit Russia.

The US President is expected to meet Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and Defence Secretary James Mattis to discuss the issue of punitive sanctions against India. Earlier, Pompeo and Mattis had argued for a waiver to India citing American interests to counter China in the Asia Pacific.

Recently, a White House National Security Council Spokesperson had said that " (CAATSA presidential) waiver is narrow, intended to wean countries off Russian equipment and allow for things such as spare parts for previously-purchased equipment."
