New Delhi:

All new vehicles from April 1 will be registered with pre-fitted high security registration plates and the motor vehicle department will be providing the number it will be dealer’s responsibility of fixing the number plate on the vehicle. The new high security registration plates will be tamper proof and will protect against counterfeiting. Currently, the number plates use screws to fix it but now it will use rivets which can be used just once. The chromium-based hologram sticker will be applied by hot stamping, which is another highlight of the new number plate.

Nitin Gadkari, Transport Minister told Lok Sabha in a written reply said, “The ministry has notified … mandating that HSRP including the third registration mark, wherever required, shall be supplied by vehicle manufacturers along with the vehicle manufactured on or after April 1, 2019 to their dealers’’.

“HSRPs have certain security features and are protected against counterfeiting. The plates are fastened with non-removable/non-reusable snap lock fitting system. Manufacturers or suppliers of HSRPs, if so authorised by the state concerned, may also supply the HSRP for old vehicles after placing the registration mark’’, he added.

The vehicle manufacturer can approach any reputed company to produce the number plates on which the sticker of registration number, engine and chassis number will be affixed on the front windshield. Once it is attacked to the number plate, it can not be tampered, even if someone attempts to tamper it or remove it, it will get damaged.

The number plates will be available only if the owner produces original documents of the vehicle. The high security registration plates are not a must for old vehicles.

An HSRP is a chromium-based hologram applied by hot stamping on the number plates both at the front and back besides laser-branding of a permanent identification number, an official said. Third registration mark refers to a chromium-based hologram sticker affixed on the inner side of the vehicles’ windshield which will have the details of registration, the official added.
