New Delhi:

JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav on Wednesday stirred controversy with his remarks in Patna while addressing a gathering of people. Yadav, in a video released by ANI, is heard and seen as saying “beti ki izzat se vote ki izzat badi hai” which translates to “the honour of vote comes above the honour of daughter/s”.

Sooner he took a U-turn from his statement reiterating that “one should equally honour votes and daughters.”

“I didn’t say anything wrong, we should honour votes as we love and honour our daughters, only then the government and country will succeed together”, he added.

The bizarre set of remarks comes at a time when five states are scheduled to go for Assembly Elections 2017.

The comparison drawn between the two, in his own words, implicitly means that “if daughter’s honour is compromised, it only affects the village or community but if the vote’s honour is compromised, it impacts the entire nation”.

Yadav is currently a member of Rajya Sabha and has also served as JD(U) president. His party, after forming an alliance with RJD and Congress, came to power in Bihar in 2015.
