Outgoing Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday made sure he sent across his message loud and clear to his party colleagues in his parting notes. Taking a swipe at the party workers for the Congress’s drubbing in the Lok Sabha elections 2019, he said at times he stood completely alone in the fight against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS).

“I personally fought the Prime Minister, the RSS and the institutions they have captured with all my being. I fought because I love India. And I fought to defend the ideals India was built upon. At times, I stood completely alone and am extremely proud of it,” he wrote in a four-page farewell letter.

“I have learned so much from the spirit and dedication of our workers and party members, men and women who have taught me about love and decency,” Gandhi added.

He also said it had been an honour to serve the party whose values and ideals have served as the "lifeblood of this beautiful nation".

Gandhi took the moral responsibility for the party's poor performance in the elections. Earlier in the day, Gandhi said he resigned as Congress president at a CWC meeting on May 25, two days after the results were declared. The party won 52 seats in the Lok Sabha elections.

As president of the Congress, he said he is responsible for the loss of the 2019 Lok Sabha election.  "Accountability is critical for the future growth of our party. It is for this reason that I have resigned as Congress president," he said in the open letter posted on Twitter.

Sources, however, said Gandhi will continue as the Congress president till his resignation is accepted by the CWC and a new chief is appointed after due process.

The Congress sources also said speculation that Motilal Vora would be appointed as  interim party president are incorrect.
