Ansari was allegedly tied to a pole and thrashed with sticks by a mob in the state's Seraikela-Kharsawan district last Wednesday on the suspicion of theft. After beating him mercilessly for about 18 hours, the villagers handed Ansari over to police. He had been in the judicial custody since June 18 and was taken to the Sadar Hospital on June 22 after his condition deteriorated. At the Sadar Hospital, he was diagnosed with multiple injuries and subsequently referred to the Tata Main Hospital in Jamshedpur, where he was declared "brought dead" by doctors.

While speaking in Rajya Sabha on the Motion of Thanks on President's Ram Nath Kovind's speech, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday said lynching of Ansari in Jharkhand, pained him and the guilty must be severely punished, but stressed that all incidents of violence in the country, whether in Jharkhand, West Bengal or Kerala, should be treated the same and law should take its course.

Tearing into the Modi-led BJP dispensation, senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad earlier said Jharkhand had become a "lynching factory". "Dalits and Muslims are being killed there every week. Prime Minister (Narendra) Modi, we are with you in the fight of 'sabka saath sabka vikas', but it should be there for people to see it. We cannot see it anywhere," Azad was quoted as saying in Rajya Sabha.
