New Delhi:

The Delhi Police on Monday filed a 1200-page chargesheet naming former JNU students union president Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid, Anirban Bhattacharya in the three-year-old sedition case. The chargesheet also named other student leaders including  Shehla Rashid and CPI leader D Raja's daughter Aparajita Raja. The chargesheet has been filed under the Indian Penal Code section 124A (sedition), 323 (voluntarily causing hurt), 465 (forgery), 471 (using as genuine, forged document), 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), 149 (unlawful assembly with common object), 147(rioting), & 120B (criminal conspiracy). The Patiala House Court will consider the chargesheet filed by police tomorrow.

Kumar while reacting to the news said: “If the news is true that a chargesheet has been filed, I would like to thank police and (Prime Minister Narendra) Modi Ji. The filing of chargesheet after 3 years, ahead of elections clearly shows it to be politically motivated. I trust the judiciary of my country.” Others who have been named in the chargsheet are Aquib Hussain, Mujeeb Hussain, Muneeb Hussain, Umar Gul, Rayeea Rasool, Bashir Bhat.

The Delhi Police charged these student leaders for allegedly shouting anti-India slogans during an event organised on JNU campus on February 9, 2016 to commemorate the hanging of Parliament-attack mastermind Afzal Guru. Metropolitan Magistrate Sumit Anand put up the charge sheet for consideration before a court on Tuesday. The police alleged that Kanhaiya was inciting, being part of the mob shouting anti-India slogan.

The February 9 event happened despite the varsity administration having cancelled the permission following a complaint by the ABVP, who had termed it as "anti-national".

The ex-JNU student leader has become a vocal detractor of the Narendra Modi government. In October last year, Kumar had attacked the BJP with having falsely implicated him in a couple of "politically motivated" criminal cases lodged in Bihar. Kumar alleged that the BJP has been annoyed over his opposition to its brand of politics since his JNU days and using its political clout to get even with him. "The FIR lodged against me by doctors at AIIMS, Patna was a handiwork of the BJP. I do not wish to blame the medical professionals.....they are working under tremendous pressure and some of them may have capitulated before the vindictive political leadership as a short cut to success", Kumar had said.

"In the FIR it has been alleged that my supporters and I had indulged in violence when we visited AIIMS, Patna to meet an associate admitted there. CCTV cameras are installed inside the hospital and till date, no footage has been found which could corroborate the allegation", Kumar had said. The ex-JNU student is now an active member of the CPI's national council.

Reacting to the chargesheet, CPI national secretary D Raja said: "After three years, the Delhi Police has filed the chargesheet and slapped sedition charges against some students that includes Kanhaiya Kumar and some other students who belong to our student organisation."

"Even at that time, we said that these are politically motivated charges and nobody can accuse the AISF for any activity against the nation. There's nothing to prove, our students can't indulge in such activities and the government can't slap sedition charges on them. We'll fight the case in the court," he said.
