Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy likely to resign today, say media reports

New Delhi:

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumarasamy is likely to resign on Monday even without a trust vote, according to media reports. Kumaraswamy has sought time to meet Governor Vajubhai Vala at 7:00 pm in the evening as the impasse in the Assembly over the floor test continued on the third day, the reports said.

However, the sources in the Karnataka Chief Minister's Office denied seeking any appointment with the Governor, which intensified the suspense over Kumaraswamy's next move. If the trust vote happens today, he is likely to lose as numbers are stacked up against the Kumaraswamy govenrment following the resignations of 16 MLAs - 13 from the Congress and three from the JDS.

After their resignations, the BJP claimed that the Kumaraswamy-led Congress-JDS coalition government came in minority, forcing the chief minister to move trust motion in the House on Thursday. However, the floor test was stalled after the house got adjourned till Friday due to acrimony by the Congress MLAs, who alleged that the BJP “abducted” one of their legislators.

The floor test could not be conducted on Friday as well despite strict two deadlines by Governor Vajubhai Vala. He had first directed the Karnataka chief minister to hold the floor test by 1:30 pm and then again by 6:00 pm. Both could not be met, and the house was adjourned till Monday.

However, the impasse in the Assembly over the trust vote continued on Monday as well amid allegations against each other by the BJP and the ruling coalition members. Karnataka Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar, who was earlier accused by the BJP of intentionally delaying the trust vote proceedings, urged Kumaraswamy government to conduct the floor test today, saying that he should not “be made the scapegoat” in the power tussle.

As the Assembly convened on Monday, the Speaker began his address saying, "I apologise for the delay. I had to hear everyone's pleas and take a stand. I will have to pass a ruling today. I was delayed as I was checking the Supreme Court order."
