Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief Lalu Prasad on Friday granted bail by the Jharkhand High Court in the fodder scam case related to Deoghar treasury. On July 5, Justice Apresh Kumar Singh had deferred the hearing on his bail plea to July 12.

"Jharkhand High Court grants bail to RJD leader Lalu Prasad Yadav in the fodder scam case relating to Deoghar treasury," the news agency ANI reported.

On June 13, the former Bihar chief minister moved the Jharkhand High Court, seeking bail in the Deoghar treasury fodder scam case on medical grounds and old age. The development comes after, the Supreme Court had dismissed Prasad's bail plea in April this year. The top court said in comparison to the 14-year sentence awarded to him in the fodder scam cases, 24 months was nothing.

In its last hearing, the Jharkhand High Court had asked both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the lawyers of Prasad to submit their arguments on the bail plea. The CBI submitted its statements in early July before the court and opposed the bail plea filed by Prasad.

Convicted in several fodder scam cases worth Rs 900-crore, Lalu Prasad is currently admitted to the paying ward of Rajendra Institute of Medical Science (RIMS) in Ranchi and undergoing treatment.

The Rs 900-crore fodder scam cases pertains to fraudulent withdrawal of money from Deoghar, Dumka and two Chaibasa treasuries of various districts of undivided Bihar in the 1990s when the RJD was in power and Yadav was the chief minister of the state. Apart from the cumulative jail term of 14 years, the fines imposed on him in various cases amount to Rs 60 lakh.
