Hisar (Haryana):

A Hisar court has convicted self-styled godman Rampal in connection with the two murder cases registered against him and 27 of his followers in 2014. The verdict was pronounced at the Hisar Central Jail. Rampal was not taken out of the prison. He was instead produced inside the makeshift court via video conferencing.

Rampal and the 27 others were booked on charges of murder and wrongful confinement after four women and a child were found dead in the Satlok Ashram on November 19, 2014. Another case was registered against the self-styled godman and his followers after a woman was found dead at his ashram in November 2018.

As many as 4,000 police personnel, besides the Rapid Action Force (RAF) and paramilitary troops, have been deployed in Hisar to maintain law and order in the district and surrounding areas. Train services to the district from different parts of the country have been stopped.

Thousands of followers of the self-styled godman might the city ahead of the verdict. The Hisar administration has deployed forces to contain any violence. In August last year, another self-styled godman Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s followers had unleashed violence in Hisar after the Dear Sacha Sauda chief was convicted of rape. As many as 30 people had died in the aftermath of the verdict and properties worth several crores destroyed.

Deputy commissioner (DC) Ashok Kumar Meena told Hindustan Times, “No one will be allowed to breach law and order. Police will deal in a strict way if anyone is found disturbing peace in the district. He added that if required, the police will also use force to maintain law and order and Internet services may also be barred.

Rampal founded the Satlok Ashram in Karotha village of the Rohtak district in Haryana in 1999, based on his following from within the Kabir Panth.
