HD Kumaraswamy takes oath as Karnataka CM amid Opposition's show of strength

New Delhi:

Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) leader HD Kumaraswamy on Wednesday took oath as the Chief Minister of Karnataka in the presence of Congress president Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Apart from Kumaraswamy, Karnataka Congress chief and prominent Dalit leader G Parameshwara was also sworn in as the deputy chief minister of the southern state. Other members of the council of ministers will be inducted after the Kumaraswamy government wins the trust vote on Friday.

Governor Vajubhai Vala administered the oath of office and secrecy to Kumaraswamy and Parameshwara. A massive stage was set up in front of the Vidhan Soudha for the oath-taking ceremony, which was attended by Opposition bigwigs, including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, West Bengal's Mamata Banerjee, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and Bahujan Samaj Party leader Mayawati. Kumaraswamy became the second Chief Minister of the southern state in a week after BJP man BS Yeddyurappa resigned from the post after his party failed to prove majority.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi and his mother Sonia Gandhi will attend the oath-taking ceremony of Kumaraswamy.

Chief ministers from several non-BJP states, including Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, Andhra Pradesh CM N Chandrababu Naidu, Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao and West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee, are likely to attend the ceremony.

Earlier on Tuesday, the Congress-JDS alliance had finalised the division of power in the state, after days of high-voltage political drama.

Congress Leader G Parameshwara will take oath as Kumaraswamy’s deputy in the new Karnataka cabinet. The Congress had got lion’s share in state cabinet and party KR Ramesh Kumar will be the Speaker of the 225-memebr Karnataka Assembly.
