The Defence Ministry on Saturday gave its nod to the proposal of fixing the minimum disability pension for troops at Rs 18,000 per month. The amount has been revised with effective from January 1, 2016. The decision has been announced with approval from Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman this evening.
Taking to Twitter, the Defence Ministry wrote, "With approval from Smt Nirmala Sitharaman, it has been decided that the disability/war injury pension, special family pension and liberalised family pension shall be minimum Rs 18,000 per month for Defence Forces pensioners/family pensioners, with effect from 1/1/2016".

The development came months after the Sitharaman ministry received a widespread speculation from across party lines for introducing a slab-based system, as recommended by the 7th Pay Commission, for determining the disability pension for defence forces.
Last year in July, the Defence Ministry had issued a letter, announcing that armed forces personnel would continue to get disability pension based on percentage system till the Anomaly Committee came out with a report on the issue.
Following this, the Centre had referred the matter to the Anomaly Committee and finally agreed to set the disability pension amount at Rs 18,000 per month. However, the committee is yet to release a report on the matter.
