New Delhi:

After Gujarat, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday kick started BJP’s campaign in Congress-ruled Mizoram and Meghalaya ahead of next year’s assembly polls.

Modi started his visit from Mizoram and reached Aizawl on Saturday morning where he also inaugurated Tuirial Hydropower Project.

Addressing a gathering after the inauguration, Modi said, “During the tenure of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee significant work was done for the development of the Northeast. We have taken forward this vision and are devoting resources for the progress of the Northeast.”

Modi also blamed the Congress for delaying the Tuirial Hydropower Project.

He said, “The project was first cleared by Union Government of PM Vajpayee ji, way back in 1998 but got delayed. The completion of this project is a reflection of our commitment to complete ongoing projects and usher in a new era of development in the North Eastern region.”

PM Modi said, his government will ensure all round development of the Northeast region and build a network of highways and roads under the ‘Bharatmala’ project.

“The Union Government has been proactively following the ‘Act East Policy’. As a gate-way to South East Asia, Mizoram stands to gain immensely from this,” the Prime Minister said.

PM Modi will also launch a mobile application ‘MyDoNER’ to connect the people of the Northeast with government.

“You don't have to send your grievances to Delhi (central govt), authorities from Delhi will come to you themselves, we have named this policy as Ministry of DONER (Ministry for Development of North Eastern Region),” Modi added.

After winning major states in North and Central India, the BJP is now eyeing Northeast, a region mostly governed by the Grand-Old party Congress.

However, despite the anti-incumbency against ruling Congress, it would not be an easy task for the saffron party to win the support of beef-eating majority of the Northeast.
