Former Uttar Pradesh chief ministers Mulayam Singh Yadav and his son Akhilesh Yadav on Monday moved the Supreme Court seeking ‘appropriate time’ for vacating their official residences allocated by the UP government.Â
The plea has been filed due to the May 7 judgement of the Supreme Court that had struck down an amendment in a state legislation allowing former CMs to retain government accommodation even after leaving the office.
The father-son duo had earlier moved the UP government demanding two years of time to vacate their residences and shifting to their private house in Lucknow.
Through advocate Garima Bajaj, the former chief ministers have now sought appropriate time to vacate their official bungalows.
The apex court, in a bench headed by Justice Ranjan Gogoi had passed a petition filed by an NGO Lok Prahari challenging the amendment made by the former Akhilesh Yadav government to the ‘UP Ministers (Salaries, Allowances and Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1981’.
The top court in its 29-page order had said that once such persons demit public office held by them, there is nothing to differentiate them from the common man.
