The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) committee on Tuesday unanimously cleared the proposal to reduce bus fares in Mumbai. Following the reduction, the minimum bus fare will be Rs 5, while Rs 20 will be the maximum fare.
Also, there is a reduction in the AC bus fare rides. The minimum fare for AC bus will be Rs 6, while Rs 25 will be the maximum fare.
According to the Times of India, the BEST had called for a special urgent meeting of committee to take final decision about fare rationalisation of BEST buses.
The committee members while discussing the proposal said they were in favour of reducing fares, but the administration should take adequate measures to ensure that buses are properly run, maintained and have good frequency and have good frequency and that BEST should be able to handle the rush of commuters after the fare reduction comes into effect.
As the proposal has been passed by the BEST Corporation Committee, it would be tabled before BMC’s standing committee and then to the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional Transport Authority (MMRTA) for approval.
It is to be noted that the decision is taken with an aim to increase the number of passengers in BEST buses. In a related development, the Mumbai’s civic body BMC on Monday, approved Rs 600 crore in phases to the BEST.
Currently, BEST has less than 25 lakh daily traveller which has seen a gradual decrease. In the year 2018, there were around 42 lakh daily travellers. Out of which, 55 per cent travellers only use the service to cover a distance of only 5 kilometres.
It is worth mentioning here that in the last month, the proposal to reduce bus fares was put on hold by the BEST Corporation Committee.
