New Delhi:

Incessant rains continued to lash Mumbai on Tuesday bringing the city life to a standstill. The weatherman on Monday had predicted 24 hours of heavy rains suggesting people stay indoors unless absolutely necessary.

The waterlogging had caused hours long snarls on major roads across Mumbai on Monday. From Linking Road, Kherwadi Bridge and Kalanagar Junction in Bandra (E) to Western and Eastern Expressways, and on the Eastern Freeway, jams were witnessed in the morning and continued till late at night.

At Khar once again owing to heavy rains, there was water-logging in Jay Bharat Society. Meanwhile, heavy rains forced authorities to create diversions at  National College in Bandra, Sion Road No. 24 and Milan subway.  Andheri subway was shut for 30 minutes owing to water logging.

Among the worst-hit areas were Malad, from where the commute to Borivali took nearly two hours, and the Andheri subway, which was shut after it flooded in the afternoon.

South Mumbai saw snarls between Annie Besant Road and Lala Lajpatrai Road while driving towards Pedder Road and Hughes Road. According to the BMC’s Disaster Management Control Room, south Mumbai recorded 75.8 mm rainfall on Monday, while suburbs received a massive 126.6 mm rain from 8.30 am to 8.30 pm Monday.

Wettest day of July

Monday was the city's wettest July day in three years. The 126.6mm rainfall that the city received in the 12-hour period from 8.30am to 8.30pm on Monday exceeded the 114.5mm it got on July 30, 2016, and July 21, 2015's meagre record of 61mm.

On Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had warned of heavy downpour over 24 hours, uptill Tuesday afternoon.
During the 12-hour period between 8.30am and 8.30pm on Monday, IMD's Colaba observatory recorded 19.8mm of rainfall and Santacruz 50.8mm.

Intermittent showers over the weekend and a wet Monday helped bring down the rainfall deficit caused by the dry spell since the last week of June. The lakes have already received 68% of the total rainfall required to ensure round-the-year water supply.
