Mumbai rains: State Government declares holiday for schools today

New Delhi:

Amid heavy rainfalls and waterlogging in Mumbai and nearby areas, the state government has declared July 2 as a holiday for all the government and private schools.

In a tweet, Maharashtra School Education Minister Ashish Shelar said, “#Mumbairains Would like to announce and confirm that tomm 2nd July 2019 has been declared as holiday ,for all schools( public & private ) in Mumbai , Navi Mumbai, Thane , kokan areas ! Stay safe!”

Not only Mumbai, but several parts of Maharashtra came to a halt with waterlogging at various places. In Palghar, the Nalasopara Railway Station was flooded due to water-logging. The Central railway has also suspended the movement of suburban trains, saying safety hazard.

In its statement, Central Railways spokesperson said, "It is nature's fury. Moving trains in Kurla-Thane section in such rains is a safety hazard at this point of time. Suburban train movement has been suspended till further advice. Inconvenience is deeply regretted."

The Railways further said that the state government and various other agencies have been requested to run extra buses between Mumbai and Pune for intercity travellers.

On Monday, the Meteorological Department warned of "extremely heavy" rainfall in adjoining areas of Thane and Palghar on July 2, 4 and 5. K S Hosalikar, Deputy Director General of Regional IMD said, "Mumbai almost non stop heavy rains since Friday.... Vigorous activity. Now also the intense spells are continue and cumulative rainfall tomorrow morning would be very interesting figure. TC. Entire Maharashtra along with central India and adjoining areas under active monsoon."
